it was a thrill to hear each of these boys tell their parents thank you for making them do Cotillion, that they couldn't wait for the next class

Tonight I arrived with 5 restless boys for Cotillion. Four of these boys had never done it before and they were all extremely nervous. On the way there, they were asking questions and telling each other that they don't know why they had to do this stupid class, that it was going to be dumb and a total waste of time. After they arrived and checked in, the boys became a little more comfortable as they laughed and joked and met a few of the other boys. But, when the girls arrived, they started to feel really sick to their stomachs and a few wanted to go home. When class was finished, they couldn't stop talking and laughing. One boy called his mother as he was exiting the ballroom to say what a wonderful time he had and that he couldn't wait to tell her all about it. All I heard on the drive home was how different Cotillion was than what they expected, how much fun they had, how cool the other kids were, and how cute all the girls were. They were disappointed that they had to wait two weeks for the next class. As I dropped off each child, it was a thrill to hear each of these boys tell their parents thank you for making them do Cotillion, that they couldn't wait for the next class. I know how hard you guys have worked to make this come together. I just wanted to tell you, on behalf of 5 families, a very big THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You guys are the best!

Dear JDW, This letter is to serve as a vessel filled to the top with gratitude, appreciation, recognition and thanks to you and your wonderful staff. Jon D. Williams Cotillions embodies the mission of Open Door Youth Gang Alternatives (Open Door) which is to provide positive, interactive and viable alternative activities for youth who might otherwise go home to unsupervised houses or be left to play outside in the crime, drug and gang infested neighborhoods in which they live. Jon D. Williams Cotillions deserves to be recognized and commended for the two years of unselfishly donated valuable time, energy, motivation, experience, services, ties and gloves. Through your efforts and professionalism the kids accidentally learned that they like ballroom dancing, knowing proper etiquette skills and that they have the ability to positively interact with members of the opposite sex. At the Cotillion you sponsored in December, I witnessed and will try to convey to you the expressions of delight, wonder and joy on the faces which I am sure were reflections from the hearts of both the adults who interact with kids and the kids who typically listen and dance to hip-hop music. Who would have thought that a tie, a pair of gloves and ballroom music could transcend what one would expect to find in the inner-city? Through your unique program the children hear loud and clear the message of self confidence, discipline, and respect for themselves and others. Rev. Kelly, his staff and kids wish to thank you for your generosity, dedication and belief that all kids deserve opportunities that may not be readily available to them. We too are sincerely grateful for the tremendous opportunities provided by the collaboration of collaboration of Jon D. Williams Cotillions and Open Door Youth Gang Alternatives.
