letter from the president, Jon D. Williams
There are many excellent cotillion organizations throughout the country. Jon D. Williams Cotillions highly encourages parents to have their children participate in the cotillion experience as a means of learning to dance and increasing social skills. Social education is very important in today’s world, and everyone can benefit from its rewards.

We are very proud of our cotillion program established in 1949 by Jon D. and Vivian Williams. It has received national and international recognition for its dance and social education programs, and perhaps even more importantly, has consistently received gratifying thank you letters from its students and their parents throughout its 54 years. All JDWC instructors are required to go through a comprehensive three year training and internship program prior to becoming JDWC cotillion directors. There is a reason why JDWC travels to over 50 cities throughout the United States.

In choosing the right cotillion program for your community you should use the same criteria as you would in choosing the right school for your children. How many years has the institution been in existence? What are the qualifications and experience levels of the teachers? What do the school’s parents have to say about the curriculum and teachers? Do the teachers have class control? Is there mutual respect between the students and teachers? These questions are essential for your child’s academic career and should also be applied when choosing a cotillion program.

Good cotillion programs proportionally divide their curriculum between dance and social education. Cotillion can be a constructive learning experience for young people to meet and socially interact in a positive, healthy environment. This environment should foster self-confidence, courtesy, sensitivity and respect for others. It should be an enjoyable experience where children learn to dance and are encouraged to develop their own sense of style, grace and poise. Cotillion can also be a traumatic experience if it is not well-structured or directed by teachers who have had extensive training and experience. Unfortunately, today anyone can become a “Cotillion Director” and organize a cotillion by either advertising or purchasing a licensee agreement from large organizations that sell cotillions and their name. We do not recommend any organization that franchises cotillions without comprehensive and extensive training.

Jon D. Williams Cotillions believes in competition. Competition breeds innovation. We appeal to parents and communities to be aware, compare, get recommendations, and—most importantly—distinguish between the organizations which host cotillion programs.

We look forward to having your children participate in one of our programs. If there is not a JDWC in your area, we encourage you to start one by contacting us.
